Travelling with Children
Children travelling alone
Unaccompanied minor travel can be followed every step of the way with the Airband™ service, giving you greater peace of mind throughout your young traveller’s journey.
How Airband™ works
When checking in at the airport, the child travelling will be given a special wristband. When they reach certain stages of their journey and their Airband is scanned by staff, text message updates will be sent to up to five nominated contacts (the parent or guardian and drop off and pick up contacts). Text messages* are sent at the following stages:
- On check-in at the airport to confirm registration
- When boarding the plane
- When their flight has landed and they are handed over to ground staff
- When they are picked up by the designated pick up person
*Text message notifications are currently not available for travel from Niue due to limited mobile services.
Unaccompanied Minors Age Limits
Please refer to the Unaccompanied Minors Aget Limits chart for permitted routes based on the child's age on the date on commencement of travel.
Infants and children can take a stroller and/or car seat for no extra charge in addition to any other allowances, even if their fare does not include checked baggage.
OK on board
Strollers like this with a completely collapsible frame and seat will normally fit in the overhead locker on our 777-300, 777-200, 787-9, 767-300 and A320 Domestic aircraft only. On our other aircraft they must be checked in because there is limited locker space. If the flight you are travelling on is full, airport staff may request that your stroller is checked in.
Must be checked in
Prams, three-wheeled jogger-style buggies and larger strollers do not fit in the overhead locker and must be checked-in on all aircraft.
On international flights our Boeing 777-200, 777-300, 787-9 and 767 aircraft may offer seats with bassinets that are:
- Designed for infants up to 8 months old and 11.8kg (26lb)
- Made up with sheets, a pillow and blankets
- 66cm (29in) long and 34.29cm (13.5in) wide
When selecting a seat, ensure there it is a seat with a bassinet icon from the bassinet row. Not all seats in this row have bassinets, so please select carefully. You’ll be asked to confirm the infant will meet the age and weight limits when they fly. If it turns out they don’t, you may be asked to move and will not receive a refund on any seat select fee.
If you are travelling with an infant aged between 8 and 15 months who does not weigh more than 11.8kg (26lb), we may be able to allocate a bassinet seat when you check in.
Groups of Children
School trips, sports tournaments, and family reunions are just some of the occasions when groups of children travel with Air New Zealand. Whatever the reason, and whatever the size of the group, it is always a very exciting adventure for children, however, it is important that there is adequate adult supervision to ensure their safety and well-being.
For this reason, we strongly recommend that there should be at least one adult for every five children travelling.
